good morning, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm linsey davis in for diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following. president trump has a full day of meetings in brussels today at nato's annual summit. at the top of the president's agenda is his contention that america's closest allies don't pay enough for their own defense. a live report coming up from brussels. miracle rescue. the 18-day-ordeal is over in thailand. all 12 boys and their coach are out of the cave, and doctors say they're in good health. a gas explosion has turned the downtown area of a wisconsin town into a warzone. rubble and burning cars filled the scene after the gas line blast in sun prairie.

and george clooney suffered only minor injuries after his scooter crashed into a car. it happened in italy as he was on his way to a set of a tv series he's producing. luckily he was wearing a helmet. those are some of our top stories. from abc news, this is "world news now." we begin this half hour with the president in europe. he comes face-to-face today with leaders he's criticized for not doing enough to financially support the nato alliance. >> the president started airing his grievances against nato before even leaving d.c. today he has a chance to confront other leaders with his concerns in person. karen travers is traveling with the president and joins us from brussels. good morning, karen, what's the president doing today? >> reporter: good morning, the president is going to start his day with a breakfast meeting with the secretary-general of nato.

he'll attend sessions of the nato council. it's different from last year when he delivered a much-anticipated speech. no meeting this time around with leaders from france or germany or canada, as you mentioned, of course, there's a lot of tensions between those countries and the united states right now when it comes to trade issues. the president will finish up his night tonight with a dinner with other world leaders, and the first lady's joining him. she did not make that trip last month to canada or singapore, so it's her first time traveling with the president overseas this year. >> and he comes with a tough message for alliance message, but is this anything new or what he's been saying since last year's summit? >> reporter: this is the same message the president brought to nato last year. he is really pushing nato alliance members to meet their commitments when it comes to defense spending. nato members have pledged to spend 2%, but the president has said it's the united states carrying the weight for these

countries. he said nato is not treating the united states fairly. the united states pays too much and european countries pays too little and they're the ones who benefit from the alliance. i think we'll see more tweets from the president hammering home that point. >> the europeans have got to love that message, right, karen? >> reporter: it is not going over well. >> no surprise. >> reporter: but they knew it was coming. it is nothing new. it's one thing for the president to say these countries aren't doing their fair share, but the timing is very interesting. because you have the president really pushing hard on european countries, almost suggesting that the u.s. would pull back.

>> reporter: an incredible ending to a mission that seemed impossible days ago. all 12 boys and their soccer coach rescued by a team of elite divers, guiding them through these dark and narrow passageways. on the final day of dramatic rescue, thumbs up. >> how many of you? 13. >> reporter: these 13 now at a hospital in an isolation unit. two of the boys have pneumonia. all put on a diet of bland foods, and because of infection fears, doctors are not allowing direct contact with visitors until their blood tests come back. their road to recovery beginning as new details emerge about just how lucky they are to be alive. abc news learning the group got out just in the nick of time. abc's matt gutman reports from thailand. >> reporter: after the navy s.e.a.l.s. got those boys and the s.e.a.l.s. out of the cave, other rescuers were in there

picking up all their equipment when suddenly that main pump that had been taking out hundreds of millions of gallons over the past weeks gave way and the s.e.a.l.s. and other rescuers had to flee for their lives. >> reporter: disaster averted and the world now rooting for the boys' speedy recovery. as for the coach, he has been criticized for taking the boys into the cave and praised while keeping them alive. while they were still trapped inside, the boys' parents wrote him a letter which read in part, do not blame yourself, we are not angry. >> the thai prime minister thanking everyone for their support. authorities in alaska are working to find out what caused the crash of a small plane. it came down on the side of a mountain on prince wales island. it is about 40 miles from the city of ketchikan. all 11 people on board survived

but suffered minor injuries. they were hoisted to safety by coast guard helicopters. it was on a chartered flight and the 72-year-old pilot was the person who reported the crash. the body of an american tourist killed by a stray bullet in mexico city is being flown the chicago today. the gunman is still on the loose. the so-called dancing fbi agent is getting his gun back. chase bishop made a brief court appearance where the judge ruled he can carry his gun again while on and off duty. the bishop was dancing at a bar when he did a back flip, causing the weapon to fall to the floor. it went off and wounded a bystander. he is charged with second degree assault. police outside charlotte have arrested ten volunteer firefighters for arson. they are charged with

intentionally setting fires to abandoned buildings. the arrest comes after a 18-month long investigation still ongoing. officials say they expect more charges and more arrests in the coming days and weeks. millions of people are facing severe weather from coast-to-coast this morning. a newborn baby was killed and more than two dozen people injured by a tornado that slammed into north dakota. the twister struck an rv park, the hardest tossing vehicles and leveling more than 100 structures there. and off the east coast, tropical storm chris has turned into a powerful hurricane, a rare atlantic hurricane for july. it's not predicted to make landfall, but it is expected to generate dangerous rip currents and rough surf. firefighters who saved a man having a heart attack chipped in for another rescue for his family. >> so gene was laying down sod at his house over the weekend when he suffered a massive heart attack.

♪ ♪ we are back with some of images that we've been just glued to out of thailand. it was an intense operation with the whole world watching and thankfully now they are all out safe. >> and our on colleagues have all been there, james longman, matt gutman, adrienne bankert, they have been there along the way. let's take a look at the reporter's notebook. >> we had no idea when it would happen, if it would happen, if it would go well. there was this real silence in the jungle where we were waiting. >> that is the first ambulance. the whole world has been waiting to see this. the whole country. we believe the first boys from that cave are in that ambulance.

>> i've been here for days waiting for these kids to come out. and we thought they were dead. we thought they were dead. and then they were coming out one by one in ambulances. just extraordinary. >> the children not being able to see their parents yet, under quarantine, of that concern that these children are in medical need and they are to be evaluated and checked out before they are reunited with their families. >> you never want to see anybody brought out in an ambulance, much less young boys, but this was a moment of pure jubilation. >> people were smiling again, people were looking you in the eye. people were saying hello to you in english. i stopped one woman and asked her, you know, what is the change? and she said now we know they survived. now we can smile again. [cheers and applause] everyone had their cellphones out, like we were at a concert. and you could see people cheering along the sides of the road. and they were all celebrating the fact that the final ambulance had come through. doctors tell us that they're giving them a very bland diet,

this morning on "world news now," after the cave rescue, what's next for the boys? >> the hospital where they're being treated has just given an update on their conditions. and what could have gone terribly wrong. also breaking overnight, a powerful explosion rocks a wisconsin neighborhood. the blast leveling a building and left cars burning as you can see there in the middle of the street. first responders are among those injured. plus passengers survive a mountainside plane crash in alaska. rescuers rush to save everyone on board, what went wrong? and nothing to see here, just a guy on the hood of a car speeding down the highway. i bet you can't guess what state this took place in.

have muscle aches. >> the boys were given some form of antianxiety medication to calm their nerves for the treacherous journey out of the cave. they were malnourished, understandably, and weak. and still not able to hug their parents. >> and there was this thumbs up from the medic and s.e.a.l.s. who stayed with the boys when they were found more than a week ago. james longman has more on the triumphant rescue. >> reporter: this dark and perilous cave, a stifling home. 10:08, the last rescue, 19 divers heading back in. the trip just as frightening, just as dangerous. the threat of rain looming. the cave's a labyrinth of twisting tunnels. the swim out in near total darkness. we're learning all the boys were given medication to keep them from panicking.

at times the passageway so narrow they traveled in single file, one in front, one in back carrying oxygen tanks. then we saw ambulances, one by the flashing lights, that is the police escort waiting for the last ambulance. this rescue faster than the others. we made a promise to get nine people out, the governor saying, and we did it. these navy s.e.a.l. divers and medic, waiting to leave until everyone was safe, giving a thumbs up, they stayed with the boys in the cave since they were found over a week ago. the once unthinkable, now a miraculous reality. the last ambulance arriving at

it's go time. the riskiest part of the dive begins immediately. the trio dives down, looking for a small hole that will lead them away from the beach. buddy teams are used with a lead diver carrying an extra tank of air. a second diver assists and at times physically assists the boy through the water. each boy was given antianxiety medication to help soothe their nerves. it's a slow passage to safety, but at 5:40 p.m., success as the first boy emerges from the cave. the next three days, the rescue divers having back in, every day, maneuvering through the narrow passageways. the last four players and the coach, the last to come out. the coach telling us it was a close call, shortly after the coach was extracted from the cave, the main pump gave out, the cave filling back up with water. the boys will be reunited with their families. and you can bank on a round of hugs 18 days in the making.
